Place your winch switches in a location where they are easy to use and see, and also somewhere they cannot be knocked easily.
Never put your limbs close to the fairlead or near the winch during operation
Always make sure you use a secure winching point/ground anchor.
Do not stall your winch, if your winch should slow down or near stalling STOP. Check for obstructions under or in front of your vehicle or possible faults with your electrical system.
Always allow the winch to stop turning before switching in a different direction.6/ When winching, try to keep your wheels turning at the same speed as the winch. This will help aid traction and help get the most from the winch.
Always keep the winch line under tension this will help to eliminate the chance of over-spooling or ropes becoming wrapped around the winch, which could lead to breakages or premature rope failure. It will also reduce the risk of "dynamic" loading and therefore increase reliability.
Do not allow the cable to 'Bunch' on the drum this could lead to the tie bars being bent or in the worst case breaking the winch casing and or damaging the rope.
Maintenance Of Electric 4*4 Winch
Your winch should never be allowed to stand for more than two months without being used – even if this means using the winch in your driveway. The idea is to get the winch nice and warm, so that the grease circulates and all accumulated condensation evaporates. An idle winch is a dying winch.
Winches are lubricated for life, and don’t require oil or grease changes. However, an occasional squirt of Q20 on the electrical components and remote plug points will keep moisture at bay, prolong service life, and ensure that the winch is ready to be used when you need it.
Your 4×4’s battery is the lifeblood of your winch, so make sure that the power cables are heavy-duty, and that the battery terminals and connections are corrosion-free and tight − but not too tight. There may occasionally be a skin of corrosion on the inside of the terminal connector − in other words, the connector looks clean, but isn’t.
Some installers make the mistake of earthing the winch cable to the vehicle’s bumper, because they assume that the bumper is adequately earthed. Double check that this isn’t the case with your winch.
Always check your winch cable for kinks, frays and broken strands. Never leave the cable bunched up unevenly on the barrel. And remember that pulling the fairlead in too tight can squash the cable’s eyelet / thimble. When this happens, you must replace the eyelet.
