Types of Industrial Disc Brakes

Slotted Disc Brakes
Slotted disc brakes feature shallow channels or slots on the rotor's surface. These slots help dissipate heat and gases generated during braking, improving overall brake performance, particularly in wet or rainy conditions. They also help prevent brake fade, enhancing stopping power and maintaining consistent braking performance over time.

Drilled Disc Brakes
Drilled disc brakes are characterised by holes drilled into the rotor's surface. These holes aid in heat dispersion, reducing the risk of brake fade during intense braking. However, drilled rotors can be more susceptible to cracking under heavy use, so they are often favoured in applications where weight reduction is a priority, such as high-performance sports cars.

Wave-Type Disc Brakes
Wave-type disc brakes stand out due to their distinctive wavy or contoured rotor shape. This design not only improves cooling efficiency but also reduces overall weight. Wave-type rotors are commonly used in off-road and sports applications where durability, heat management, and reduced unsprung weight are essential for optimal performance.

Advantages of Industrial Disc Brakes

》The structure is compact, the friction plate wears evenly, and the service life is long.

》The brake disc has no friction increasing effect on the friction plate, and the braking efficiency is less affected by the friction coefficient, so the stability of the brake is better.

》Because of the non-friction increasing effect, the comfort of the car is improved.

》There is very little reduction in braking effect when immersed in water, and it needs to be braked once or twice after the water is released. It can be recovered and has good drainage performance.

》The brake has a simple structure and is convenient for maintenance and repair.

Construction of Industrial Disc Brakes

Rotor
The rotor, a circular disc affixed to the wheel hub, rotates along with the wheel. Typically constructed from cast iron or steel, though some high-end vehicles employ carbon ceramic rotors, these components can also feature slots or drilling to enhance heat dissipation.

Brake Pads
Brake pads exert pressure on the rotor, generating the friction necessary to decelerate and stop a vehicle. Comprising a metal portion known as a shoe, with a lining attached to it, the lining is the part that makes direct contact with the rotor and gradually wears with usage. Brake pad linings come in various materials, categorised as organic, semi-metallic, or ceramic, each impacting brake life, noise during braking, and stopping efficiency differently.

Piston

Connected to the hydraulic brake system, the piston is responsible for moving the brake pads into contact with the rotor when the driver applies the brake pedal. Brake systems may feature a single piston moving both pads, two pistons pushing the pads from either side of the rotor, or even four, six, or eight pistons for enhanced braking power, albeit with increased complexity and cost.

Calliper

This housing fits over the rotor and houses the brake pads, pistons and brake fluid ducting. Two types of callipers exist: floating (or sliding) and fixed. Floating callipers "float" over the rotor, having pistons on one side only. When braking, these pistons push one side of the brake pads into the rotor, causing the calliper to slide and engage the pads on the opposite side. Fixed callipers, on the other hand, remain bolted in place, featuring pistons on both sides of the rotor, which move when the driver applies the brakes, resulting in more even brake pressure and firmer clamping.

Sensors

Certain brake systems incorporate sensors within the brake pads to alert the driver when pad wear reaches a critical point. Other brake sensors contribute to the vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS) functionality.

Applications of Industrial Disc Brakes

Automobiles: Disc brakes are mostly used in cars, motorcycles, and other motor vehicles due to their efficient braking performance, heat dissipation capabilities, and ease of maintenance.

Aircraft: Disc brakes are utilized in aircraft landing gear systems to provide reliable and effective braking during landing and taxiing.

Bicycles: Many high-performance bicycles are equipped with disc brakes, offering improved stopping power and modulation, especially in wet conditions.

Industrial Machinery: Disc brakes are employed in heavy machinery and industrial equipment, such as cranes and winches, to enable controlled stopping and holding of loads.

Racing Vehicles: Disc brakes are extensively used in racing cars and motorcycles, where their superior braking performance and heat dissipation capabilities are crucial for high-speed racing.

FAQ

Q: What are the pros and cons of disc brakes?

A: Disc brakes are superior to shoe brakes in more ways than one, but for some cyclists, the advantages do not outweigh the disadvantages. Despite all the performance advantages, disc brakes can be more difficult to install and maintain, and they are heavier than rim brakes.

Q: What is the average life of disc brakes?

A: Generally speaking, brake discs can last for upwards of 50,000 miles when properly maintained. By taking good care of your brake discs and driving sensibly, your brake discs could last up to 120,000 miles. Without regular maintenance, your car's brake discs could deteriorate at the 25,000 mile mark.

Q: Are disc brakes high maintenance?

A: Drum Brakes: Require periodic adjustments for optimal performance. Disc Brakes: Require less maintenance and adjustments.

Q: What not to do with disc brakes?

A: Harsh detergents and degreasers, as well as lubes and oil, can be absorbed by disc brake pads and result in drastically reduced braking power and loud brake squealing. Also, contact with these materials will irreversibly ruin your brake pads.

Q: How often should I lubricate my disc brakes?

A: Usually, you should grease your brakes whenever you replace your brake pads. This is often every 30,000 to 70,000 miles, but it can change based on your car's make and model and your driving style.

Q: How often should disc brakes be adjusted?

A: They must be clean, in good condition and properly adjusted before every ride. Over time and after lots of miles on the trail or road, disc brakes lose some of their effectiveness. This leads to longer response times, less efficient braking and less bike control.
