When operating a winch, a set of safety specifications must be followed to ensure the stable and efficient operation of the equipment. Below are the key points to note when using a winch:
1. Fixation and Inspection
The winch shall be firmly anchored to the ground, and the elastic coupling must not be loose. Before startup, carefully inspect the condition of safety devices, protective equipment, electrical circuits, grounding wires, brakes and wire ropes to ensure they are all in good working order.
2. Protective Measures
If the winch is equipped with belts or open gears, protective covers shall be installed. Meanwhile, open-type jaw pulleys are prohibited for use as guide pulleys.
3. Rotation Direction
For winches with forward and reverse rotation functions, ensure that the drum rotation direction is consistent with the indication on the control switch.
4. Grounding and Neutral Connection
The winch shall be equipped with a reliable grounding or neutral connection device, and the grounding resistance shall be controlled within 10Ω. Grounding and neutral connection shall not be mixed in the same power supply network.
5. No-load Test
Prior to formal operation, conduct no-load forward and reverse rotation tests. Check the smoothness of winch operation, flexibility of the transmission and braking mechanism, safety of fasteners and connection parts, as well as the lubrication and oil leakage conditions.
6. Wire Rope Management
Wire ropes shall be selected in accordance with the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) instructions. When the wire rope is fully unwound from the drum, at least three turns shall remain on the drum. The end of the wire rope must be securely fastened, and the distance from the drum edge to the outermost layer of the wire rope shall not be less than 1.5 times the wire rope diameter.
7. Connection and Protection
The connection between the wire rope, drum and lifting cage must be firm to avoid friction against scaffolds and the ground. When crossing road surfaces, crossing protection devices shall be installed.
8. Obstacle Clearance
Ensure there are no obstacles or jamming within the movement range of the winch brake control lever.
9. Wire Rope Arrangement
The wire rope shall be neatly arranged on the drum. If overlapping or diagonal winding is found, stop operation immediately and rearrange the rope. It is strictly forbidden to step on or pull the wire rope by hand while it is in motion.
10. Personnel Safety
During operation, no person is allowed to step over the operating wire rope. After lifting materials, the operator shall not leave the winch unattended, and no one is permitted to stay or pass under the lifted materials or lifting cage. During breaks, the materials or lifting cage shall be lowered to the ground.
11. Handling of Abnormal Conditions
If abnormalities such as abnormal noise, insensitive braking, or a sharp temperature rise of the brake band or bearing are detected during operation, stop the winch immediately. Resume operation only after inspecting and troubleshooting the fault.
12 Power Management
Cut off the power supply in case of power outage during operation or during breaks. Before leaving the site, lock the switch cabinet to ensure safety.
As a key piece of equipment in hoisting operations, the performance and safety of the winch are directly related to the smooth progress of the operation. Therefore, make sure to fully understand its performance, characteristics and operating specifications before use.
